January 7-11, 2024
C2SMARTER kicked off the new year at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 2024 Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. Over the course of the conference, which was attended by over 16,000 industry professionals and researchers, our team and fellow attendees networked and advanced their shared vision for the future of transportation.
TRB accepted over 40 papers from professors within the C2SMARTER Consortium, covering a plethora of transportation research interests. Topics such as delivery services, reducing transit costs, and optimizing bike infrastructure were represented within the Center’s papers and presentations that were highlighted at the conference.
Along with NYU Tandon School of Engineering, C2SMARTER was also honored to host our first reception as the new Center and to celebrate Tandon’s 170th anniversary. The reception, which was attended by over 300 people, brought together team members across the consortium as well as industry peers to kick off the week with food, drinks, and conversation.
C2SMARTER Activity at TRB 2024
C2SMARTER hosted a series of innovative and engaging events over the five day conference. Some of the events include:
- C2SMARTER director Kaan Ozbay hosted the Understand Digital Twins for Transportation Systems workshop, which was attended by over 140 people.
- TSU Professor Mehdi Azimi served as the presiding officer (chair) for a lectern session on inland waterway research. Prof. Azimi also received recognition from TRB’s AW020 committee during the Annual Meeting.
- Rutgers’ Professor Hani Nassif, Patrick Lou, and Chan Yang presented their lectern session “Prediction of Maximum Live Load Effects for Bridges Based on Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) Data,” which explored the continued work on the BQE roadway testbed and WIM research for Autonomous Enforcement Approach for overweight trucks.
- NCA&T’s Victoria Lanier, Venktesh Pandey, and MD Sami Hasnine led “Optimizing Bike Infrastructure for Sustainable Urban Mobility: A Joint Mode and Route Choice Equilibrium Approach,” a presentation for TRB Minority Student Fellows.
- Joseph Chow participated in a panel moderated by fellow NYU Professor Daniel Vignon; they discussed scientific outreach and communication for young academics. The panel was organized by the Young Member Coordinating Council of TRB.
At the NYU/C2SMARTER reception, two awards were presented to distinguished alumni. Harry Capers, who is celebrating 50 years as an alumnus of Polytechnic Institute, was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award. Capers currently serves as vice president at Arora and Associates, a civil engineering firm in Trenton, NJ.
C2SMARTER’S Assistant Director of Research Jannie/Jingqin Gao, who received her PhD from NYU in 2020, was presented with the Emerging Leader Alumni Award.
Both recognitions reflect the alumni’s remarkable professional contributions to the field of transportation.
