C2MART Presents at NYC Vision Zero Research Symposium

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Town+Gown: NYC held its annual Vision Zero Research on the Road symposium, a public event for city agency staff, academic researchers, and other analysts to share recent findings that relate to road safety. Various topics were covered during the symposium, including the intersection of sustainability and traffic safety, enforcement and education, emerging trends in e-micromobility, speeding, substances and driving, and road design. C2SMART Center Director, Dr. Kaan Ozbay, and Senior Research Associate, Dr. Jingqin Gao, were invited to present C2SMART at the event.

C2SMART Mobility Data Dashboard: MATSim

As part of the MATSim-NYC development, we calibrated a behavioral model (estimated as a tour-based nested logit model) for choosing different modes of transportation in NYC, which was encoded into the MATSim-NYC simulation as utility function parameters. Using the COVID mobility data, we recalibrated the behavior model to reflect the increased aversion to use shared use modes like public transit.

C2SMART Mobility Data Dashboard COVID-19 Travel Survey

An online survey focusing on travel trends under the impact of COVID-19 was administered from July to October 2020, after approval by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The objective of the survey is to look at how different disadvantaged population groups, especially people with disabilities and low-income households, were affected by the changes as a result of COVID-19.

Using MATSim-NYC to Optimize the Brooklyn Bus Network Redesign

Using MATSim-NYC, the BUILT Lab at C2SMART simulated a proposed network redesign to improve the level of service for the users as well as reduce the operating costs for the MTA. Bus network redesigns will impact travelers’ mode, route, and departure time choices, and the synthetic population in MATSim-NYC allows simulations to incorporate potential impacts on all of these to generate optimally designed transit routes.

Undergraduate Summer Research Program

Each summer, members of the Tandon School of Engineering faculty open up their labs to allow NYU Tandon, NYU Dual Degree Program in Engineering (CAS/Tandon), NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and select non-NYU rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students to complete 10 weeks of hands-on research.
