Mohsen Amjadian

Assistant Professor, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Dr. Mohsen Amjadian received his Ph.D. degree in Structural Engineering from the City University of New York (CUNY) in July 2019 and is currently pursuing his research as a postdoctoral fellow in the Civil Engineering Department of CUNY where he is also serving as an adjunct lecturer. The main theme of his research is modeling, designing, and testing of smart structural materials and control systems (Smart-SMCSs) to enhance the structural performance of civil structures subjected to natural hazards. This is achieved using intelligent sensing and actuation technologies, and advanced simulation and modeling techniques with an emphasis on data analytics and machine learning methods.
His Ph.D. dissertation focused on modeling, designing, analyzing, fabricating, and characterization testing of passive and semi-active electromagnetic eddy current friction dampers that are capable of generating smooth hysteretic loops to control acceleration responses of bridges and multistory base-isolated buildings subjected to earthquake.

His postdoctoral research focuses on the development of a high-power electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH) with multiple magnetic arrays and copper coils to convert the vibrational energy of highway infrastructures into electrical energy. The objectives of this project are to model, design, analyze, fabricate, and field test this EMEH so that it can be used as (1) a durable power source for conventional wireless sensors installed on highway bridges for the purpose of long-term structural health monitoring, and (2) a vibration sensor to measure the daily traffic load on highway bridges.

To date, his research has resulted in 11 peer-reviewed journal papers, 9 conference papers, 2 book chapters, 2 technical reports, and one pending patent. His research works have had a quantifiable impact on the field and been cited more than 240 times so far. He is a regular reviewer for several top journals in the fields of civil and mechanical engineering (Publons). He is the recipient of 2016 Outstanding Reviewer award from Journal of Bridge Engineering of ASCE where he is currently serving as a member of the early career editorial board in pursuing an editorial leadership position. He is also an active member of several professional societies including ASCE, SPIE, and EERI.
