Undergraduate Summer Research Program (UGSRP) 2023
June 5 – August 11, 2023
NYU members of the C2SMART consortium recently participated in NYU Tandon’s annual UG Summer Research Program, which invites NYU Tandon, NYU Dual Degree Program in Engineering (CAS/Tandon), NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, and select rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduate students to complete 10 weeks of hands-on research. UGSRP students gain real-world experience, interactive learning exposure, and public speaking practice.
On July 10, C2SMART hosted a welcome event for the students who worked with the center’s faculty. Students work with university faculty and other mentors throughout the summer, culminating in research presentations and poster sessions where the students can demonstrate their work. Professors Chow, Ergan, and Ozbay all served as mentors this summer. This year’s C2SMART affiliated research projects center around urban mobility, roadway floodwater detection, pedestrian safety, and other transportation related issues.
This year, students were also asked to submit a 3-4 minute video of their summer research project that can be easily explained to a “non-STEM” audience. These videos were then entered into contention for program-wide awards, and students competed against several research categories.
C2SMART UGSRP students were recognized by the judging panel: Lukelo Luoga’s video for Enhancing Equitable Pedestrian Safety in Smart Cities received 3rd place for “Most Creative” and Grace Liu’s video Roadway Flood Detection Model placed 3rd for “Best Pitch.”
At the end of their 10-week tenure, students presented their presentations to each other and to their research mentors, including Dr. Ozbay.
Throughout the course of the summer, UGSRP participants honed soft skills, like public speaking, in addition to the strides they made technically with their hands on research experience.
