Director’s Letter
C2SMART had a momentous second academic year with several new initiatives launched to expand our center’s impact on transportation systems in smart and connected cities. C2SMART continues to grow both in terms of its impact as well as its size. The center launched 12 new very exciting research projects welcoming in 8 new principal investigators across our 5 consortium institutions.
C2SMART took important steps over this past year towards ensuring that our research and activity were meaningful both in terms of their scientific contribution as well as real-world impact. We launched the Future of Mobility Work- shop Series, and focused research and outreach events on underrepresented groups in mobility and transportation research, beginning by looking at the difference between women’s and men’s travel. C2SMART also held training courses for Department of Transportation employees, as well as continued to support the Emerging Leaders in Transportation development program for young professionals.
Over the upcoming year, we look forward to further increasing our impact through real-world implementation and technology transfer. We are proud to announce the launching of a new partnership with New York City and industry partners to test advanced sensing equipment on city roadways as part of a joint collaborative effort between NYU and Rutgers. UTEP’s Urban Connector smartphone application targeted at helping seniors get around will be made available to the public. And our focus on underrepresented groups also continues with a series of projects and out- reach events focused on the mobility needs of people with disabilities.
Finally, I would like to thank our numerous government, industry, academic, and media partners, who combined with C2SMART researchers, students, and staff have made tremendous contributions towards amplifying the benefits of our research. I invite you to take the time to read more about all of these efforts highlighted in detail across the pages of this report, and follow up with our researchers and me to discuss and grow new ideas.
