Emerging Leaders in Transportation
The Emerging Leaders in Transportation program, spon- sored by C2SMART, develops early-career transportation professionals to develop and promote innovation within their organizations. The two-day program includes professional development with executive leaders, com- munication work through networking activities, and site visits to major transportation management locations. The 2018 class of Emerging Leaders was drawn from a variety of transportation agencies, policy organizations, and companies, including PANYNJ, NYCDOT, JetBlue, TransitCenter, AKRF, Oakland DOT, World Economic Forum, and more. Abdullah Kurkcu, C2SMART’s systems engineer and research associate, was one of this year’s Emerging Leaders.
The 2018 program drew upon leading experts to partic- ipate in a four-part workshop series addressing policy issues, leadership skills and technical innovation. The 2018 program also included a group visit to the East Side Access site, intended to provide participants with
C2SMART Students Win IATR Hackathon
C2SMART students Reuben Juster and Assel Dmitriye- va won the 4th Annual IATR Hackathon, sponsored by Curb Mobility. Participants were tasked with presented a “Smart Mobility Plan” involving innovative multi-modal mobility service and safety enhancements in Calgary, the host city for this year’s IATR Annual Conference. For their solution, which focused on decreasing the negative impacts of TNCs without limiting people’s mobility options, Assel and Reuben created a dynamic ride pairing system that would enhance taxi dispatch systems. In their Dynamic Ride Sharing System, individ- uals with the same origin would be encouraged via an
perspective on managing large infrastructure systems.
Emerging leaders learn to evaluate the feasibility of innovation for their workplaces, incorporate it into the workflow, and build long-term technology plans. By preparing emerging leaders for the future, C2SMART helps strengthen the capacity of transportation agen- cies, enhance the region’s economic competitiveness and implement technological improvements for every- day commuters and travelers. The Emerging Leaders program will continue in 2019.
in-app popup to pair their trips if both can be conve- niently served by a single vehicle.
As winners of the hackathon, Assel and Reuben were invited to attend the IATR conference to present their work. Reuben recently completed the first year of his Ph.D. studies in Transportation Planning and Engineer- ing at NYU Tandon. Assel recently graduated from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts and worked as a research assistant at C2SMART while completing her degree.
