7th Annual Women in Transportation Panel

WIT panelists and moderator during the discussion

In honor of Women’s History Month, C2SMARTER, YPT-NYC, the NYU-ITE Student chapter, and the ITE MET Section had the pleasure of hosting this year’s Women in Transportation Panel on March 12.

Moderated by NYU PhD Candidate Zerun Liu, the panel featured three transportation professionals who represent different facets of the industry (L to R above):

  • Semiha Ergan, Associate Professor, NYU
  • Geline Canayon, Senior Project Manager, Aimsun
  • Alia Kasem, Senior Data Scientist, NYC DOT

Over 50 students and professionals attended the event, both in person and online. The panel was interactive, as audience members were encouraged to ask questions throughout the presentation.

The panelists spoke about their career trajectories and of both the successes they’ve achieved as well as lessons learned on their journeys. The importance of mentors, surprising challenges, and how to be an effective collaborator were also topics of conversation.

As these women represent academia, agency, and the private sector, each brought their own unique perspective regarding life in transportation.

This event endeavors to provide insights to C2SMARTER students who are preparing to enter the workforce themselves. This year’s speakers did just that, imparting invaluable wisdom regarding their own paths from engineering students to industry professionals.

Huge thanks to the panelists and moderator, as well as NYU ITE, YPT-NYC, and the ITE MET Section for cohosting. See you next year!
